Catalog consistency

Same description on multiple products — Shopify catalog

Finds different products that have exactly the same visible description text.

Needs your reviewAbout this check

What does an exactly duplicated description across products mean?

Two different products can have exactly the same visible description. Sometimes this is intentional, for example for variants or products sharing the same characteristics. In other cases, copy/paste can hide differences in material, size, compatibility, package contents, or use.

The detector groups descriptions that match exactly under the published rule and gives the merchant the context of the products involved. A finding is a review prompt, not a claim that every duplicate text must be rewritten or an SEO-penalty label.

Examples showing why identical values still need context

These fictional examples illustrate the type of duplication the detector can group. They do not assume repetition is automatically wrong and are not measurements from a store.

Two chairs with different materials share the same full descriptionKeep shared facts but review whether material and care information should differ

Rewriting must come from real product data rather than the desire to make text different.

Two colors of the same model use the same general description[may be correct if the shared description remains factual for both]

Exact duplication can be legitimate when the relevant difference is represented elsewhere and the text does not become false.

A new product was duplicated from another and kept the old descriptionReview attributes, package contents, and use before rewriting

The finding helps locate copy/paste but cannot automatically infer which sentences are wrong.

01

What does PROVEN check?

Checks different products with exactly the same visible description text.

02

Why does it matter?

Identical descriptions can remove content differences between the products involved.

Why is this useful to a merchant?

Groups of identical descriptions reduce audit work in a large catalog: the merchant can see affected products together and decide whether shared text is intentional or remained from a duplication/import workflow.

For the customer, the value is accurate product information. Useful and distinct content can matter for search, but this page does not promise that simply rewriting duplicate text produces a particular ranking or indexing outcome.

03

What can PROVEN do?

PROVEN can identify the duplicate group and show the values involved; rewriting requires your review.

How PROVEN handles this check

The workflow separates pattern detection from the editorial decision about final wording.

  1. Groups identical descriptionsPROVEN compares visible descriptions and identifies different products sharing the same value under the detector.
  2. Keeps the group for comparisonThe finding shows the products and shared description so real differences can be reviewed.
  3. Prepares rewriting for reviewPROVEN can prepare proposals, while the merchant confirms what shared information stays and which details should differ.

Why is your review required?

Identical descriptions can be correct for very similar products or intentionally reused common content. The detector does not know the editorial reason for repetition by itself.

Review must check each product's data and avoid artificial synonyms or invented claims merely to make text different.

What this page does not tell you

  • The existence of this detector does not mean your store contains this problem; the catalog state must be established by checking real data.
  • Examples on this page are fictional explanations. They are not measurements from a store and do not promise a particular remediation.
  • The criteria for this check support review and triage. They should not be reinterpreted as a universal requirement imposed by Shopify, Google, or W3C.
  • This check does not claim Google automatically penalizes pages for an identical description; Google explains that duplicate or very similar pages can be clustered for canonicalization.
  • A duplicated catalog value is not presented here as an automatic SEO penalty; page, product, and editorial context still matter.

Frequently asked questions

Is a duplicate description automatically an SEO problem?

No. Google does not treat duplication by itself as spam. The PROVEN check is useful for accuracy, differentiation, and editorial review rather than declaring a penalty.

Must descriptions for very similar variants be rewritten?

Not necessarily. If shared information is accurate for all products, repetition may be intentional; review should focus on real differences.

Can PROVEN generate differences that do not exist in the data?

It should not. A proposal must remain grounded in real product information and be reviewed before application.

Why review duplication if there is no automatic penalty?

Because copy/paste can leave incorrect information, and distinct useful content can help customers understand differences between products.

Sources about content and duplication

These sources provide independent context about unique content, similar pages, and search presentation. The PROVEN detector checks catalog values; it does not turn duplication into an automatic SEO penalty.
