Hidden comments left in description — Shopify catalog

Finds comments that are not visible to shoppers but remain in the content.

What are HTML comments left inside a description?

HTML comments are text kept in source between comment delimiters and ignored by the browser during rendering. In a product description they can come from internal notes, templates, migrations, or fragments that were temporarily disabled and then forgotten.

A comment being invisible to shoppers does not make it harmful by itself. The detector surfaces it because it remains data in the product field and can contain instructions, old markup, or notes that no longer belong there. The merchant decides whether it should remain.

Examples of hidden content that can remain in source

These fictional examples show the difference between rendered text and comments kept in source. They do not imply that every comment should be deleted.

<!-- TODO: update dimensions -->[not visible to shoppers, present in code]

The note may have been useful temporarily; review whether it still belongs in published product content.

<!-- <p>Old promotion</p> -->[markup disabled by a comment]

The content does not render but remains in the field and could be reactivated accidentally later.

<!-- internal identifier: X42 -->[internal data hidden in code]

The finding does not label the value sensitive; the merchant decides whether it is needed in the product field.

01

What does PROVEN check?

Checks for hidden comments left inside the description content.

02

Why does it matter?

Comments are not visible to shoppers but remain unnecessary or internal data in the product field.

Why review or clean up comments?

Shopify explicitly supports internal comments in the rich text editor and explains that they are saved as internal text without being visually published. Their presence can therefore be intentional, so the detector must not treat every comment as an error.

A migrated catalog or content maintained by several teams can accumulate expired notes. PROVEN helps inventory and review them; this page does not claim that removing comments creates a ranking benefit.

03

What can PROVEN do?

PROVEN can prepare removal of detected comments; the change requires your review.

How PROVEN handles detected comments

The workflow separates rendered product copy from commented data and requires review before removal.

  1. Locate the comment delimitersPROVEN identifies the comments and preserves their text as evidence for the merchant.
  2. Review the purpose of the noteThe merchant decides whether it is a still-useful internal note, intentionally disabled markup, or residue that can be removed.
  3. Prepare minimal removalWhen a comment is unnecessary, PROVEN can prepare its removal without changing the visible text around it.

Why might your review be required?

Shopify documents comments as a legitimate editor feature, so their presence is not inherently an error. A note can still serve an editorial workflow.

Check whether commented text contains instructions, markup that could be reactivated, or information that should be moved to an internal system before deletion.

What this page does not tell you

  • HTML comments do not render visually but remain in saved source.
  • The detector does not automatically classify a comment as sensitive, risky, or useless.
  • Removing comments is not presented as an SEO ranking factor.
  • Examples are fictional and are not content from your store.
  • Markup inside a comment should not be activated automatically by merely removing the comment delimiters.

Frequently asked questions

Are comments visible to shoppers?

Normally no. Browsers ignore HTML comments while rendering, and Shopify describes them as internal text that is not visually published.

Why would someone keep comments intentionally?

They can be editorial notes or temporarily disable a fragment, although internal information may be better managed in dedicated tools.

Can PROVEN delete every comment?

Not as a blind rule. Each case needs review to avoid losing a useful note or unintentionally reactivating markup inside the comment.

Do comments affect SEO?

This page makes no such promise. Comments are invisible in rendering, and this detector is about catalog-content hygiene and control.
