Outdated formatting in description — Shopify catalog

What is outdated HTML formatting?

HTML has evolved and some older elements are now classified as obsolete or deprecated. MDN lists them explicitly and recommends replacing them in new content. In a Shopify description, such elements can remain from legacy content, imports, or copy/paste and coexist with modern markup.

This check flags outdated formatting elements left in the description. PROVEN can surface them with context, but modernization requires review: an old tag can wrap important product copy, and its replacement must preserve useful meaning and presentation.

Examples of modernization that should not be mechanical

These fictional examples use familiar old elements for explanation. They do not represent the complete matching criteria used by PROVEN.

Replacing markup must not change the product message or assume identical presentation automatically.

An old element is used only for appearanceReview a modern alternative in the storefront

A semantic replacement or CSS may be appropriate, but the result needs validation in the real theme.

The objective is markup maintenance, not rewriting product information.

01

What does PROVEN check?

Checks for outdated formatting elements left inside the description.

02

Why does it matter?

Outdated formatting can add hard-to-maintain structure and inconsistent rendering behavior.

Why does this matter for an existing catalog?

Outdated markup can make behavior and maintenance less predictable, especially when descriptions come from different sources and periods. Standardizing structure can improve maintainability, but it does not justify blind conversion.

PROVEN does not claim an obsolete element automatically creates a visible error and does not promise SEO outcomes from replacement. The concern is long-term compatibility and maintenance, and the change must be evaluated in theme and product context.

03

What can PROVEN do?

PROVEN can flag the elements and their context; modernizing the content requires your review.

How PROVEN handles outdated markup

The detector keeps the element, its content, and its context separate from the decision about a modern alternative.

  1. Flag the elementPROVEN locates the element classified as outdated without assuming the text inside should be removed.
  2. Identify intentThe merchant determines whether the element carries structure, emphasis, appearance, or no longer has a useful effect.
  3. Review modernizationA replacement or removal can be prepared only after the result preserves content and is checked on the storefront.

What should be checked after modernization?

Compare hierarchy, emphasis, spacing, links, and copy. An old element can be technically replaced while still producing a relevant visual difference in the current theme.

When the element came from copy/paste, Shopify provides ways to inspect HTML and clear formatting. Those are useful platform tools, not authorization for automatic whole-catalog conversion.

Important limitations

  • Obsolete or deprecated does not mean browsers automatically refuse to render the element.
  • The detector does not assume every old element produces a visible storefront problem.
  • Modernization must preserve useful product copy and meaning.
  • This page does not expose an exhaustive list of the complete matching criteria used by PROVEN.
  • No SEO, speed, or conversion improvement is guaranteed by replacing markup.

Frequently asked questions

What does obsolete mean in HTML?

MDN lists old HTML elements that are deprecated or obsolete and recommends avoiding them in new projects.

Should an old tag simply be deleted?

Not necessarily. Preserve content and intent; replacement with current structure or styling can be more appropriate than deletion.

Can Shopify still render old markup?

Concrete behavior depends on browser and theme. The detector does not equate a standards classification with an observed storefront error.

Is this an SEO optimization?

Not as a promise. PROVEN addresses markup maintenance and consistency here without ranking guarantees.
