Search description too long — Shopify catalog

Flags search descriptions that are too long.

Needs your reviewAbout this check

When is a search description too long for this detector?

The detector compares the product’s dedicated meta description with the maximum used by this check. Very long copy can contain secondary detail, repetition, or information that could be condensed.

Google does not guarantee a fixed snippet length and truncates snippets as needed; it can also generate the snippet from page content. The PROVEN threshold is therefore an editorial signal, not a universal display rule.

Examples of condensing a meta description

These fictional examples do not reproduce the detector threshold. They show how a relevant summary can be preserved without repetition or unnecessary lists.

20 L waterproof urban backpack with laptop compartment, multiple pockets and adjustable straps for work and travel...20 L urban backpack with water-resistant material and a laptop compartment. See product details and available options.

The example keeps the main product information and removes the long list of uses.

Discover our ceramic mug, an ideal mug for coffee, tea, cocoa, gifts, office, home, kitchen and much more...350 ml ceramic mug with a matte finish. View product details and available options.

The summary removes repetition and stays focused on information from the page.

Very long description with many promotional claims[relevant and verifiable facts need to be selected]

Condensing should not preserve commercial claims that are unsupported by the real page.

01

What does PROVEN check?

Compares the search description with the maximum used by this check.

02

Why does it matter?

A value above the check threshold may contain more text than intended for this field.

Why is this useful to a merchant?

Google recommends meta descriptions that provide a short, relevant page summary, while still being able to show a different snippet depending on the query. A length detector helps identify copy worth reviewing for concision.

The objective is not reaching a magic character count. It is preserving useful information while removing repetition or wording that does not help the user understand the page.

03

What can PROVEN do?

PROVEN can flag the value and prepare an edit proposal; the final wording requires your review.

How PROVEN handles this check

PROVEN flags when its own threshold is exceeded and keeps final condensing under editorial review.

  1. Compare with the detector thresholdPROVEN compares the search description with the maximum used by this published check.
  2. Flag the copy for condensingThe finding indicates a value that may contain more text than intended for the field being checked.
  3. Prepare a version for reviewPROVEN can prepare an edit proposal, while the merchant confirms the final summary.

Why is your review required?

Condensing should preserve relevant, truthful information about the page. Mechanical trimming can remove the very feature that distinguishes the product or leave an incomplete sentence.

The final snippet is selected by the search engine, so review focuses on the quality of the configured summary rather than a promise about how many characters will be displayed.

What this page does not tell you

  • The existence of this detector does not mean your store contains this problem.
  • The examples are explanatory and are not measurements from a real catalog.
  • The criteria used by this check should not be treated as a universal limit imposed by Shopify or by a search engine.
  • A store’s actual state must be established through a real check of the data available for that store.
  • This check does not predict the snippet length Google will display and does not guarantee that the configured meta description will be used for a particular query.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal meta description length?

Google does not guarantee a fixed snippet length. PROVEN uses its own threshold to flag values that may benefit from condensing.

Can PROVEN automatically cut the text to the threshold?

PROVEN can prepare a proposal, but final wording requires review so that relevant information and complete sentences are preserved.

Will Google show the whole meta description if it is under the threshold?

There is no such guarantee. Google can generate or truncate a snippet depending on the page, query, and device.

What should be removed first from a long description?

Repetition, boilerplate, and secondary detail are useful candidates, but the decision should be made in the context of the real page.
